Well, it is simple but maybe not THAT simple.  However, most units reviewed come with detailed installation instructions that will step a do-it-yourselfer through all the proper preparation and installation steps.

Drop-in gas ranges come in two versions.  These basic models from which to choose are:

·          Drop In Gas Range with Surface Cooking Only

·          Drop In Gas Range – Surface Cooking/Oven Combo

Modern kitchens are usually designed with a wall oven (or two!) separate from the actual cook top surface.  In such case, the first choice will provide you with a proper cooking surface.  The latter would be the best choice best choice if there is no wall oven or other cooking appliance available in the kitchen.

The range-surface-only version installed to hang on the countertop and will look as if it is ‘built-in’. They require additional paneling and cabinet support underneath them. These units do consume about ~ 24” inches of depth but that should usually leave room for a short cabinet or a couple of drawers.

Combo Drop-In Gas Ranges consume a great deal more vertical cabinet space…just as a slide in range would consume.  However, these units typically do not have a bottom storage drawer but one might fit underneath, depending on your particular cabinet depth and combo oven choice.

Once installation is complete, drop-in gas ranges look completely natural and appear to have been installed from day one.  You can get a number of optional including grill grates, griddle surface, warming trays and multiple burner configurations.

Drop in ranges come in a variety of colors to suit everyone's taste and needs. Not everyone would use all the options the make in drop in ranges. You can buy the options you desire or the ones you are going to use. They can all be supplied with drop in gas ranges of different size, color and functionality.

 

What Should I Look For in a Drop-In Gas Range?

While there are multiple choices in colors, surfaces, burner configurations, based upon most reviews read and indexed, here are the most popular requested options:

Burner Configuration: Ideally you will want to have a variety of burner sizes and outputs to meet your cooking needs. Consider these as a guideline:

  • 2 or more Burners > 7,000 BTU
  • 1 Simmer Burner ~ 5,000 BTU
  • 1 or more High Output Burner ~ 17,000

Other Options

  • Pull-Off Control Knobs – Dishwasher Safe
  • Removable Grates – Cast Iron, Dishwasher Safe
  • Matching Hood – If desired, you may want to check to see if a matching exhaust hood is available.
  • Surface Construction - Stainless Steel or Enamel for easy cleanup, scratch-resistant and long wearing
  • Fuel Source – Check to see if there is a conversion to/from Propane (LP) kit and vice versa if necessary
  • Construction – Some inexpensive models are flimsy and may not hold up to constant use.  Consider a commercial model as these are sturdier and last much more in trying circumstances.

Drawbacks to A Drop-IN Gas Range

  • Reduces the amount of available counter space
  • Selection can be limited at many chain discount stores or home centers. Consider shopping at a specialty kitchen or restaurant supply web site.
  • Must have natural gas (or propane) supply available
